© Erik Patton BBOP’s work is based on real experiences of biodiversity offset design in pilot projects with companies. In a BBOP pilot project, BBOP helps a company and its local advisers to design a biodiversity offset for one of the company’s development projects, with the aim of demonstrating ‘no net loss’ or a ‘net gain’ of biodiversity.

Some of those projects started when the programme began, others joined the programme more recently. In each of these projects, the developer is undertaking the biodiversity offset on a purely voluntary basis, rather than as a regulatory requirement. Each of the pilot projects is only part way through the process of designing an appropriate biodiversity offset, so the information shared in the following case studies is preliminary:
